Himalayan Glaciers are retreating! The Indian Government now has a detailed study to prove.
The Himalayan glaciers are a valuable national and global resource. An extensive study on 'Snow and Glaciers of the Himalayas', and a study on 'Snow and Glaciers of the Himalayas: Inventory and Monitoring' have been carried out.
Releasing the publications, Jairam Ramesh said: “This is the most detailed satellite-imagery based glacier study ever done in the Himalayas. 75% of these glaciers have shown retreat at an average annual rate of 3.75%; 8% have shown an advance and another 17% have exhibited stability. Also, for the first time, an inventory of glaciers in the extended Indus-Ganga-Brahmaputra Basins has been attempted: the total count is now around 33,000. Of these, anywhere between 10,000 and 15,000 glaciers would be glaciers within India’s geographical boundaries. I hope these publications will inspire informed, science-based discussion and debate on the subject.”

India to add 9th mission to climate change action plan
India is set to expand its domestic action plan to limit the growth of greenhouse gases by adding clean carbon initiatives to its eight-pronged response to tackle climate change.
Hi,
This month has started with Centre of Science and Environment coming out with an explosive report of the role of transfat, sugar and high salt in junk foods and cold drinks. This fact was known to everyone who has worked in nutrition line or in food safety. Thanks to CSE now it is being publicly debated.
We think that the issue is educating the children and parents about the safety of these foods and also Indian snacks which are rich in above ingredients. As we move towards more open and free economy it will be difficult to stop these organizations with large advertising budgets pushing their products. Our best bet is to educate the consumer to make an intelligent choice about what they want to eat and how much. Secondly a legal frame work should be evolved by the government where doubtful ingredients are mentioned on the package and not following norms should invite strict penalties.
