Himalayan Glaciers are retreating! The Indian Government now has a detailed study to prove.
The Himalayan glaciers are a valuable national and global resource. An extensive study on 'Snow and Glaciers of the Himalayas', and a study on 'Snow and Glaciers of the Himalayas: Inventory and Monitoring' have been carried out.
Releasing the publications, Jairam Ramesh said: “This is the most detailed satellite-imagery based glacier study ever done in the Himalayas. 75% of these glaciers have shown retreat at an average annual rate of 3.75%; 8% have shown an advance and another 17% have exhibited stability. Also, for the first time, an inventory of glaciers in the extended Indus-Ganga-Brahmaputra Basins has been attempted: the total count is now around 33,000. Of these, anywhere between 10,000 and 15,000 glaciers would be glaciers within India’s geographical boundaries. I hope these publications will inspire informed, science-based discussion and debate on the subject.”

India is set to expand its domestic action plan to limit the growth of greenhouse gases by adding clean carbon initiatives to its eight-pronged response to tackle climate change.

This year has started with revolutions happening in Middle East. The old despots of Tunisia and Egypt have been shown the door. The remaining rulers are scared and let’s see what future has in store for them.
The above events have direct implication on the world oil prices and they have started rising as the fighting in Libya goes on and uncertainty increases. The increasing oil prices will again hit our economies hard as they provide the energy required to run our economies. The need for alternative form of energy like renewable energy is again highlighted.
We should take these disturbances as a wakeup call and work hard on renewable resources. This will not only help our economy but will help fight climate change. Talk to your friends, write to the government spread the message of renewables, if we can start this energy revolution it will be for a better world.
